Welcome to my updated Admin Unicorn blog! Here you will find posts of interest to those magical administrative professionals of all stripes, especially office managers, administrative assistants, executive assistants, and all who care deeply about the employee experience.

Since I first started this blog, the world of office work has shifted significantly due to two pandemics: Covid-19 and the uprising against systemic racism and police brutality. We are all navigating a lot of change right now, but one thing I know about administrative professionals is that we were built to be resilient and adapt to change, and we’ve got this!

I will bring you topics, tips, tricks, and tech ideas that will help bring efficiency, mindfulness, knowledge, and that special Admin Unicorn sparkle to your work – especially as we are in this “new normal” of working from home or social distancing in the office and challenging white supremacy culture in our companies and organizations.

I will also share lessons I am learning as the firm I work for goes through structural change and an organizational journey to eradicating the harmful attributes of white supremacist culture to becoming an anti-racist organization.

I will be writing about topics I was hesitant to talk about when I first started this blog… things that might not be considered “professional.” But something I am learning is that the common definition of what is “professional” is deeply rooted in white supremacist culture and is largely responsible for inequity in the workplace. It is time to change our understanding of what it is to be professional. It is time to truly be open to folks bringing their authentic, whole selves to work. Because many times we say that we want folks to bring their whole selves to work, but are we all really open to that? I think if we were, the state of California would not have had to pass the Crown Act to prohibit discrimination based on hair style and hair texture, so black folks are no longer discriminated against for wearing their natural hair to the office.
